Our House
About Our House
Our House is a unique charity that Outdoor Makeover is pleased to contribute to and support. Our House has been breaking the difficult chains of homelessness for Georgia residents by providing early childhood education, support services, and additional resources for families who are undergoing the difficulties of homelessness.
Our House began in the late 1980’s, when a group of local area citizens saw that homeless mothers and their children were required to leave emergency shelters early every morning—no matter the weather or the wellness of all family members, and regardless of whether or not these families had anywhere to go. The mothers were also given a short amount of time to find both employment and housing before permanently leaving the shelter. In March, 1988, Our House was officially founded.
The charitable Our House founders saw a mission: offering homeless parents more than free childcare with a loving, safe haven where each parent could leave her child while seeking employment and permanent housing. The founders saw that without reliable childcare, homeless parents were hopelessly trapped in the cycle of unemployment, poverty and homelessness.
Today, Our House is a full-day, year-round, nationally-accredited early childhood education center. It serves 81 children daily and offers comprehensive supportive services to their parents.
The Our House founders did it right when they understood that to effectively combat homelessness, the charity programs and services had to address the root causes of homelessness: lack of child care, lack of education and lack of work skills among homeless parents. We are proud to support this charity.
What We’re Doing to Help
Outdoor Makeover donated a brand new, outdoor fire pit to Our House. We were pleased to help benefit a charity devoted to helping the homeless. Our fire pit, valued at $1,500, was put to good use helping them to raise money.
